How we reach the scores

We compare Matter connection method, UK socket design, platform support, electrical rating, energy monitoring, setup, app quality and value.

Scores are an editorial assessment of published specifications and intended use, not laboratory-test results. No manufacturer can pay for a higher position.

How to choose a Matter smart plug

Native Matter or a Matter bridge?

A native Matter plug joins a compatible platform directly over Wi-Fi or Thread. A bridge-based plug first joins its own ecosystem, then the bridge exposes supported controls to Matter. Both can work well, but a native device usually has fewer dependencies.

Wi-Fi or Thread?

Wi-Fi models use your router and are straightforward for a few plugs. Thread creates a low-power mesh and can respond locally, but it requires a compatible Thread border router in your home.

Energy monitoring varies

Matter support does not automatically mean energy reporting. Some plugs show live watts and history only in the manufacturer app, so check exactly what your preferred platform can display.

Check safety and fit

Confirm the plug is the UK version, stays within its stated load rating and does not block the neighbouring socket. High-power heaters and appliances need particular care.

Common questions

Do Matter smart plugs need a hub?

Matter-over-Wi-Fi plugs usually do not need a manufacturer hub, but Matter-over-Thread plugs need a compatible Thread border router. Bridge-based plugs need the named bridge.

Do Matter smart plugs monitor energy use?

Some do, but energy monitoring is not guaranteed by Matter. Check whether the specific model exposes live power, history or cost estimates in its own app.

Can I use a Matter plug with Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home and SmartThings?

A certified plug can join supported Matter platforms, but features vary. Multi-admin can share one device between platforms when the device and controllers support it.

What can I safely connect to a smart plug?

Stay within the plug manufacturer’s electrical rating and follow the appliance instructions. Avoid products that should not restart unattended unless their manufacturer explicitly permits smart-plug use.
