How we reach the scores

We compare Matter connection method, fitting, brightness and colour capabilities, platform support, responsiveness, app features, standby needs and value.

Scores are an editorial assessment of published specifications and intended use, not laboratory-test results. No manufacturer can pay for a higher position.

How to choose a Matter smart bulb

Match the fitting first

UK lamps commonly use B22 bayonet, E27 large screw or E14 small screw fittings. Check the holder and available space before comparing smart features.

Native Matter or bridge-based?

Native bulbs connect to Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread. Bridge-based ranges can expose their bulbs through a Matter-compatible hub, often retaining mature accessories and scenes in the brand app.

Thread needs a border router

A Matter-over-Thread bulb needs a compatible Thread border router from your chosen ecosystem. Wi-Fi bulbs use the home router, but several bulbs can add network traffic.

Look beyond colour

Compare useful white colour-temperature range, minimum dimming level, brightness and standby behaviour. Brand-only effects may not appear in every Matter platform.

Common questions

Do Matter smart bulbs need a hub?

Wi-Fi Matter bulbs generally connect without a manufacturer hub. Thread bulbs need a compatible Thread border router, while bridge-based ranges such as Hue require their bridge for Matter access.

Will a Matter bulb work if the wall switch is off?

No. A smart bulb needs continuous power to receive commands, so leave the wall switch on and control it with an app, voice assistant, automation or compatible wireless switch.

Should I choose E27, B22 or E14?

Match the bulb to the lamp holder: E27 is a large screw, B22 is a bayonet fitting and E14 is a small screw. Also check the bulb’s physical dimensions.

Does Matter support every lighting effect?

Matter covers common controls such as power, brightness and colour, but brand-specific scenes, music modes and firmware features may remain in the manufacturer app.
